108-year-old Meeting His Namesake Great-Great-Grandson Will Melt Your Heart

Jenna Lehne

With all the cultures that exist, traditions vary from family to family. Regardless of one’s background, many would agree that family traditions must be kept going. One of the most common traditions among all people is the passing down of someone’s name, whether it’s being named after a parent, grandparent, or even great-grandparent.

For 108-year-old Mr. Esmond Allcock, it was not until January of 2017 that he was able to pass on his namesake to someone of the future generation. The great-grandfather was born in 1910 outside of Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan and he is officially the oldest living man in the country of Canada.

Esmond has only been married once and is the father of six children. He has 17 grandchildren, 36 great-grandchildren, and 12 great-great-grandchildren. With all the family that Mr. Allcock has, you would think someone would have named their child after him.

Luckily for one of the oldest men in the world, his great-granddaughter was due to have birth on January 11, 2017. Knowing that the name Esmond had yet to be passed down, she made sure to name her son after the patriarch of the family.

After a few weeks of recovery and spending time with her son, Jenna, Esmond Allcock’s great-granddaughter decided to pay him a visit in the neighboring province. The 108-year old man remembered who his granddaughter was after being reminded of how she always wanted him to walk her around.

When Esmond had found about his great-great-grandson’s name, he told Jenna “You don’t know what this means to me.”

To know that someone decided to name their child after you is quite an honor. But, for someone as old as Esmond to finally be able to pass on his name is something that really couldn’t be described.

Have you ever thought about passing on your grandparent’s name to your children?
