7 Activities That Will Bring You Instant Happiness

When it comes to being happy, a lot of people assume that telling someone to just ‘cheer up’ is enough. Considering the stress that many of us go through over the course of a week, it is never that simple. That being said, there are ways for someone to cheer up that involve more than mere words.

Here are a couple of activities you can do to boost your level of happiness:

1. Exercise More

For most people, especially if exercise is not a regular thing, this might be difficult. But exercise has been scientifically proven to greatly improve a person’s mood. Not only will it improve health, but you can set aside as little as seven minutes to feel a little happier.

It is also medically recommended for anyone suffering from depression, something guaranteed to improve some with a regular exercise schedule.

Aside from improving symptoms of depression, there are many other benefits to exercising. Your brain power will increase along with your body image even if no weight loss is observed.

2. Build a Fort

As children, we often had the most fun when we were playing with barely anything around. One of the most common activities for any kid is the act of building an ‘impenetrable fortress’ out of couch cushions and bed sheets.

Don’t worry, though, because as an adult there are far more resources to building a fort. If you have a creative mind and you’re great with tools, bring a childhood friend over to help construct the fort you both have always imagined.

Use boxes you no longer need as additional material or turn them into armor for your fort’s guards. (I’ll probably be doing this when I get more cardboard boxes in the mail).

3. Spend Time with Friends and Family

No one can know for certain how long they have on this Earth, so it is important to spend as much time as possible with friends and family. Even the most introverted person can benefit from spending time with loved ones.

Harvard expert Daniel Gilbert explains, “We are happy when we have family, we are happy when we have friends and almost all the other things we think make us happy are actually just ways of getting more family and friends.”

You can do things like taking silly pictures, making different faces before the shot is snapped.

If that’s not enough motivation, studies have shown spending time with friends and family can and have led to longer lifespans.

4. Play with Your Pet

Many people adopt pets for the companionship they provide. Even our four-legged family members need interaction, so pick up your mood and play around with your favorite fuzzball.

Pets are a proven way to improve one’s self-esteem and are great for giving you a smile when you’re feeling down.

Consider getting a pet if you do not already have one. If you are not allergic, think about getting yourself a cat. Since we got her, my wife’s cat will actually sit and ‘hug’ us whenever she perceives our mood as negative. (No, before I had her, I didn’t know they could do that).

5. Watch Your Favorite Movie or Actor

Movies are a great way to both leave the house and gain a general boost in mood. Bring along a friend you don’t always get to see and choose a movie together. If a trip to the local theater is out of the question, see what movies either of you have on Blu-ray or DVD.
There are movies categorized as ‘feel-good,’ so if you’re an avid film fan, these are the movies to look for if a mood boost is what you’re in need of.

Watch re-runs of your favorite shows and pick out your favorite moments from each episode.

6. Watch Something Funny

“Laughter is the best medicine for sadness.”

If you need a quick pick-me-up, having what celeb Mel B calls a ‘belly laugh’ is a great way to do it. Go to a stand-up comedy show or surf YouTube to find hilarious videos of cats freaking out at the weirdest things.

7. Get Creative

If you’re looking to branch out and try something new, cooking a full meal from scratch is a great way to start. Start with a dish that requires easily acquired ingredients and taste as you cook.

Cooking not your speed? Sit down and draw to your heart’s content or grab a small canvas and go all ‘modern art’ on it and start throwing the paint till you’ve created a ‘masterpiece.’ Just don’t make a mess in someone else’s house.
