These Singaporean Flying Taxis Will Change The Way We Travel

Most movies have realistic versions of transportation. But science fiction has always been a source of inspiration for engineers and designers when it comes to cars or airplanes. One of the biggest problems we’ve come across in regards to commuting to work or driving on a freeway is severe traffic congestion.

One company based in Germany is looking to change the way we travel with electric ‘air-taxis’ known as Volocopters. The cockpit of the machine itself looks much like a helicopter. Attached to the top of it is a large halo with eighteen small propellers attached to a series of specific points in the ring.

Completely electrical and combustion-free, the helicopter-like machine will be able to travel a distance of twenty miles. It will also only have the capacity to transport two people at a time.

Trials to test the Volocopters are going to be conducted in Singapore in 2019. These series of tests will be conducted away from major cities and other populated areas to examine realistic routes for the ‘air-taxi’ transports. These tests are all supported by the Ministry of Transport (MIT), Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS), and the Economic Development Board (EDB).

Volocopter seeks to provide places known as ‘volo-ports’ across various rooftops where people can jump into air-taxis. The website boasts a “pleasantly quiet” machine “incorporating state-of-the-art components that optimize the acoustic signature.”

Volocopter’s mission statement is to “make humanity’s dream of flying come true and help modern cities resolve their increasing mobility issues.”

They will be controlled via a joystick in the cockpit or remote-controlled from the ground.

The Volocopter is reminiscent of many modes of travel from science fiction, but testing will determine whether or not it is a technology worth investing time and money into.

Do you think the Volocopter is a good idea? Or is it just another piece of technology the world doesn’t really need?
