Books are a wonderful way to pass the time. If you have the right one, you can get lost in it for hours. You can journey alongside elves and rangers as you begin a journey to destroy a shiny ring, or jump in a stranger’s spaceship to save the multiverse.

While there are a great deal of books in existence, only few can make it to a list that will help keep their recognition in the time to come. In a series hosted on U.S. network PBS, viewers were asked to help literary experts bring together a list of 100 of the most popular novels in a voting event known as The Great American Read to determine America’s Favorite Book.

Every single book out of the group was written by a different author, the time of publication ranging from the year 1600 to 2016. The voting period for The Great American Read lasted five months, but one book stayed at the top from the very beginning: To Kill a Mockingbird.

Written by Harper Lee, To Kill a Mockingbird is the story of racism in a Southern town told through the eyes of a young white girl.

Since its publishing in 1960, the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel has sold more than 40 million copies worldwide and had been translated into more than 40 languages so far.

Many books came close to taking the spot including J. K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series, J.R.R. Tolkien’s Lord of The Rings, The Outsider series by Dian Gabaldon, and Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen.

Harper Lee’s book may have taken the title of America’s Favorite Book, but that just means it beat out 99 other great books.

If you are a literary nerd, you owe it to yourself to check out the 100 book list from The Great American Read.
