Brain Exercises You Can Do Right Now That Will Boost Your Cognitive Skills
The brain is the most important part of your body, but that should go without saying. Most people expect that simply eating healthy is enough to keep a sharp mind. But what really helps are exercises that test our brain’s power. Here are a couple of exercises known to boost the brain in different ways:
1. Play Music
Playing a musical instrument is not a skill many can say they have. Remember, though, that it takes extensive time and practice for one to be considered ‘decent.’ Don’t let that defeat the purpose, though. Teaching yourself to play an instrument is a great way to stimulate the creative part of your brain and stave off the effects of aging on the brain.
2. Learn a new language
It sounds like a daunting task, but putting in the proper time and practice will help you develop a brand new skill. Taking the time to learn a new language will not only stimulate the brain but increase your understanding and gift you with an extensive vocabulary, something proven previously to reduce the risk of cognitive decline.
And who knows, you might be able to ask your crush out with the new language you’ve worked on learning.
3. Draw a Map
This is a pretty simple activity to help get the mind going. If you’ve been to a place before, try to draw a map of it from memory alone. Do this every time you visit a new place, taking note of the surrounding environment.
Feel free to place any little figures that aid in remembering where certain landmarks are.
4. Increase Hand-Eye Coordination
Fine motor skills are of grave importance to every human. When our motor skills are going, it is often a sign of a much more serious issue. There is plenty of ways to fine-tune and help maintain motor function.
One of the most popular ways to keep hand-eye coordination sharp is knitting. It requires a person to focus on a small area and knit yarn together while simultaneously counting to keep track of their stitch.
Another popular method for improving and maintaining fine-motor skills is the use of video games. One might think that video games couldn’t possibly do a thing to improve a person’s health, but studies have shown that disabled who use video games in conjunction with regular therapy have had significant improvements to their motor functions.
5. Taste Bud Challenge
When most of us eat, the last thing we think about is what our taste buds can do. Yes, they’re on our tongue and look a little funny. But, they are so much more than dots that line our tongue.
Seasoned chefs can use their taste buds to do amazing things. If you’re really into food and also want to help maintain brain health, eat your meal slowly the next time you’re at a restaurant and try to identify each ingredient that went into your meal. You might surprise yourself with how well you do.
6. Opposite Hand
This one is a just a bit simpler than the others. If you are either right or left-handed, use your non-dominant hand for an entire day. Something as simple as switching which hand you use can change up how your brain processes thought.
Write with your left? Put your pen on your right and start writing simple sentences. Do you pick up the spoon to eat cereal with your right? Switch to your left and see if you can finish the entire bowl that way.
7. Talk to Yourself
You might sound a little crazy when you do this, but as long as you refrain from this activity in public, you should be fine. Don’t just talk to yourself like you’re being formal with a person you just met. Discuss things like the weather or afternoon plans when you’re talking to yourself. Talk about what’s going to be cooked for dinner, or what you see around you when you’re taking a stroll.
Forget looking crazy, though. Many people who have conversations with themselves find solutions to problems they did not see before.
8. Play with Your Change
It might seem a little childish, but playing with your pocket change can prove to be a great brain exercise. Whenever you are driving or simply walking down the street, reach over for where your coins are and try to determine their value without looking.
