7 Healthy Alternatives To Comfort Food

The majority of us will often look to food as a source of comfort. On the off-chance you are having a particularly bad day, you are sometimes drawn to the greasiest burger or flavorful bag of chips with a ridiculous sodium content.

While the flavors may bring us comfort and calm our minds, only time will tell what the effects are down the road. If you still want to turn to comfort food but want to be healthy while doing it, here is a list of comfort food alternatives you can try out:

1. Simple Homemade Peanut Butter

Peanut butter is my wife’s go-to comfort food. But she likes to add semi-sweet chocolate chips with every spoonful. That does indeed sound very delicious and it certainly is. When you factor in the sugar content, it becomes a little too much.

Here’s a how-to recipe from SkinnyMs.com:

  • Step 1: Preheat oven to 350F degrees
  • Step 2: Spread the peanuts on a baking sheet, roast for 20 minutes and stir halfway through baking time to avoid burning. After they are done, allow peanuts to cool for 10 minutes
  • Step 3: Add peanuts to a food processor or high-speed blender, preferably one with a plunger. Sprinkle salt in with the peanuts and then process for 5 to 10 minutes. You’ll know when you’ve got peanut butter after the oil is released and the contents become smooth and creamy.

2. 5-Minute Peanut Butter Fudge

Peanut butter is great on its own as a snack. But if you want to give yourself a little more flavor good ‘ole peanut butter, make yourself a quick peanut butter fudge. You can find the recipe right here.

Because it is made of peanut butter, this fudge should be kept in the freezer if you are not yet eating it. I’ve had the unfortunate pleasure of my favorite cookies and cream fudge melting to a puddle, so make sure to put yours away.

3. Peanut Butter Banana Cups

Whether you’re using your own homemade peanut butter or store-bought organic, peanut butter banana cups can be a great snack. Here’s how to make this tasty morsel:

  • Step 1: Melt dark chocolate and spoon to the bottom of small baking cups, possibly silicone
  • Step 2: Top the chocolate with a slice of banana
  • Step 3: Add a mix of peanut butter and coconut oil to the cup
  • Step 4: Then add a bit of chocolate to the very top, then place in the freezer for twenty minutes or so before enjoying

4. Banana Ice Cream

This is a great alternative snack if you are looking to be healthier. If you want to go the easy route, you can start by cutting half-inch slices of banana and leaving them in the freezer for three hours.

After you wait that short period, pull out the slices and blend them together until they take on a creamy consistency. If the fruit’s flavor alone is too bland for you, consider adding vanilla extract, almond butter, raw honey, cacao powder, or crushed walnuts.

Get a little crazy a combine any combination of the extra ingredients for an altogether different flavor.

5. Tomato Basil Soup

You can use the recipe seen here at SkinnyMs. or go the Campbell’s Soup route. If you go with Campbell’s, all you’ll have to do is add ingredients like celery stalk, diced carrots, chopped fresh basil, and even shallots.

I’m a little too picky to have tomato soup with those ingredients, but I’ll have to make that for my wife and see what she thinks.

6. Cauliflower (Green) Pizza

You can look online for a recipe to put together a cauliflower crust, or you can simply get a pre-made cauliflower crust from your local grocery store. Yes, you found it in a freezer but it’s a healthier alternative than a bread crust.

Use a traditional tomato sauce and add your choice of greens. But if you’re craving some meat, add some low-fat pepperoni. Cheese is already healthy for the most part, so don’t your favorite brand of mozzarella.

7. No-Butter Butter Chicken

As the name suggests, this dish foregoes the butter. The recipe instead calls for Greek yogurt. You can toss your chicken into a slow cooker with your choice of yogurt. After an hour or two, you’ll have some delicious slow-cooked and healthy chicken.

Put on a quick pan of rice and warm some flour tortillas for a slightly heartier meal.
