Over the years, pizza has become an extremely popular food across the entire world. But where did it come from? Who made the first one and does it look anything like ours? While millions of people may eat it, those of us who do know little to nothing about it.

1. Where it All Began

If the thought of pizza makes you think Italian, you would be wrong. It’s a little-known fact that ancient Greeks and Egyptians ate a flatbread dish that actually resembled pizza. But they topped theirs with olive oil and spices.

The pizza that graces our tables today got its start in Naples, Italy where the first tomatoes were placed on ‘pizza’ in the 18th century.

2. United States Loves It (A Lot)

No other place in the world treats pizza the way that the United States does. In a country with such a wide variety of cultures, many people with culinary interest from basic to professional, have their own way of preparing it.

To give you an example of the sheer amount of pizza, the country eats about 100 acres a day. That is an estimated 350 slices a second.

3. Highest Cost Pizza tagged at $12,000

In the countries where people eat pizza, they have many establishments that sell it differently. Italy, though, is home to the world’s most expensive pizza pie. Luis XIII in Salerno, Italy sells it at $12,000 and for good reason.

They start with an aged dough and it’s not just made any old way either. You’ll be treated to a chef preparing your pie right in your own home. It comes with three types of caviar, Cilento, mozzarella di bufala, Lobster from Norway, and grains of pink Australian sea-salt from Murray River.

Both the price tag and the toppings make this a menu item for only a select few.

4. Largest Pizza Ever

When it comes to food, someone must always outdo their competitors and the world at the same time. An iconic day in pizza history took place on December 13, 2012. The world’s largest pizza ever made was prepared in Rome, Italy by Dovillio Nardi, Andrea Mannochhi, Marco Nardi, Matteo Nardi, and Matteo Giannone.

Representatives from Guinness were present to measure and document the massive pie, which was documented to have a surface area of 13,580.28 ft squared.

5. Someone Once Ate 200 Pounds Worth in a Week

If you asked ten people what their favorite food was, one is likely to give pizza as their answer. And it seems that no one in the world likes to have pizza more than Cristian Dumitru of Romania.

The year 2006 saw Dumitru eat 200 pounds worth of pizza in just seven days, setting a world record. It even surpassed the record set by Takeru Kobayashi.

6. Mayonnaise with Your Slice?

Since pizza has entered the modern day, history has seen people add an interesting list of toppings to their own custom-ordered pies. Many people are partial to things like the Hawaiian, double pepperoni.

Others might ask for things like anchovies, bell peppers, or onions. That’s what most people find delicious. In Japan, those who eat pizza are known for adding a helping of mayo to their slice, much like American do with ranch dressing.

7. Hawaiian Pizza is Canadian

Do not let the name of the specialty pizza fool you. The first Hawaiian pizza was made by Sam Panopoulos in 1962. At the time, he was running a pizzeria in Ontario. The native of Greece wanted to try something different, so he grabbed a can of spare pineapple and tossed it onto the pizza.

Despite the revelation of its origins, lovers of this specialty pie will definitely stay loyal.

8. Dough-spinning is a Sport

The world’s biggest pizza lovers have come together to put together something called the World Pizza Championships. There are a total of five competitive events: Freestyle Acrobatic Dough Tossing, Fastest Dough, Largest Dough Stretch, Fastest Pizza Box Folding and The Pizza Triathlon.

The freestyle acrobatic portion also has its own masters division.

9. First Online Pizza Order was in 1974

That year, Michigan State’s Artificial Language Laboratory doing a test-run on an invention dubbed the “speaking computer.” An order was made to a local place for a pie topped with pepperoni, mushroom, ham, and sausage.
