Fun Activities You Can Do On Rainy Days

Rain benefits us in many ways. It helps clean the air we breathe, grow our crops, and in the right amounts, can wash the dirt off our cars. A great deal of us might see a rainy day as a hamper on our ability to have fun, but there are plenty of things you can do for fun and still be dry.

Here are a couple of ways to have fun even when the rain doesn’t let up:

1. Have An Indoor Treasure Hunt

If you’ve got children then you know how hard it is to keep them entertained inside the house. Develop your own treasure hunt and prep clues for your kids. Your kids will be doubly entertained if any of their favorite cartoons are pirate-themed.

The prize for finding a treasure can be anything from regular or candy coins or the ability to gain cash for a toy later. It’s a great opportunity to teach your children the value of teamwork and have fun even during the rain.

2. Make Your Own Bubble Bath

Provided your tub is the adequate size to do so, why not slip into a nice bubble bath? Real Simple’s recipe is: a half cup of your go-to liquid soap, a tablespoon of sugar and/or honey, and a single egg white.

Pour in the mixture as your tub fills with water. The honey is a natural ingredient that helps your skin retain its moisture. And the egg white helps the bubbles last longer, ensuring you have a true ‘bubble bath.’

3. Camp in The Great Indoors

My family has always been partial to camping, regardless of the location. As kids, my dad, siblings, and I would camp in the backyard. If the weather isn’t permitting you to do so, set up a small dome tent in the largest room in your house and prepare a ‘camper’s meal’ for the family to enjoy.

With air mattresses, pillows, and sleeping bags, it’ll feel like you really did go camping. If you absolutely have to leave the house for something, do so for graham crackers, a few Hershey chocolate bars, and marshmallows to complete the experience with s’mores.

4. Deep-Condition Your Hair

So it is raining and you don’t want to go anywhere and risk your hair getting unusually frizzy. Rainy days are the perfect time to treat your hair with the utmost respect and deep-condition it.

If you aren’t familiar with how to do so, one way to deep-condition is to coat your luscious locks in about a half cup of mayo. Start at your scalp and work your way to your ends.

After it’s been on for about a quarter hour, rinse it out completely. Your hair will feel softer than it ever has.

5. Bake Up Some Chocolate-Chip Cookies

Baking is probably one of my favorite indoor activities, regardless of the weather. On a rainy day, there’s prepping and baking a batch of warm chocolate-chip cookies. With a glass of milk and two or three cookies, there’s no imitating that satisfaction.

If sugar or peanut butter cookies are more your style, feel free to bake whatever type suits you at the time.

6. Organize Your Own Film Festival

This is one activity I loved doing as a kid with my little brother. If it’s just you and your partner or both of you and the kids, picking specific movies to watch can be fun. My go-to for an in-home movie night is Hitchhiker’s Guide to The Galaxy and Galaxy Quest.

Movies like Shrek, Toy Story, and most things with animated creatures are a great time for the whole family.

7. Grab The Slow Cooker

On a rainy day, it’s relatively common for people to feel like cooking is too much work. Look up a simple recipe and dust off the slow cooker that’s been sitting in the cabinet for a while.

You can toss all the ingredients for the dish in and let them cook to done. In the hours while you wait, you can organize any sort of recipes or books you have.

8. Curl Up With a Book

My wife always tells me how the sounds from the rain soothe her at times. Why not read a good book as you take in nature’s music. Whether it’s a title you’ve gone through already or it is one you’ve been dying to read, a good book is an inexpensive way to have a good time during the rain.

9. Play a Board Game

One thing I’ve been meaning to do is buy board games for this very reason. Monopoly is a popular one, but if you want to make the game faster, look into grabbing a copy of Monopoly: Cheaters Edition.

What do you like to do for fun in the rain?
