Ginger is scientifically known as Zingiber officinale. It comes from a plant whose subterranean stem (called rhizome) is often used as a flavoring or garnish for many foods. But there is more to the humble ginger root than people realize. It has many benefits that few are familiar with.

1. Contains Gingerol, a Powerful Medicinal Substance

Gingerol is a substance within the root that is observed to have powerful medical properties and applications. Long has it been used in traditional/alternative medicine, often to help with digestion, reduce nausea and aid in fighting off a flu or cold.

It can also be used in many forms such as fresh, dry, powdered, and as oil or juice.

Gingerol is the substance responsible for ginger’s anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects.

2. Ginger Can Treat Almost Any Nausea

Everyone has felt at least once in their life what it’s like to be sick with nausea. These days, the selections of how to treat it are many but they take forever or might trigger a vomiting spell.

If anti-nausea pills are too much while you’re sick or pregnant, give ginger a try. Ginger root is touted a remedy for sea sickness and is often prescribed for certain patients. Vomiting during post-surgery recovery may also be treated with the root.

12 studied that surveyed 1,278 women, found about 1.1 to 1.5 grams of ginger had a profound effect on the reduction of nausea symptoms.

One study found that, over the course of 11 days, a total of 2 grams daily was enough to help reduce muscle pain those going through elbow exercises.

4. Chronic Indigestion? Try Ginger

A lot of people suffer from what is known as chronic indigestion. No matter what they do, food seems to cause pain and discomfort in the upper stomach area. It is believed this is affected by the time it takes one’s stomach to empty itself of food contents.

In a study of 24 people, 1.2 grams of powdered ginger was enough to accelerate the emptying of the stomach by an impressive 50%.

If food doesn’t feel like it is leaving fast enough, try adding powdered ginger to your soup or daily tea.

5. Helps Reduce Menstrual Pain

A woman’s cycle can be unusually painful, depending on the individual’s typical symptoms. Ginger has been used in the past many times for the treatment of menstrual pain.

A study of 150 asked to take 1 gram of ginger powder during the first three days of a cycle, found it was as effective as mefenamic acid and ibuprofen at managing pain.

Ibuprofen, if taken for too long, can cause stomach bleeding, so go with the safer alternative of ginger if pills are your normal go-to treatment.

6. May Lower Cholesterol

Managing cholesterol is an important part of staying healthy. A great deal of people have problems managing their LDL (low-density lipids), and often show high levels in blood tests.

A 45-day study that observed 85 individuals with cholesterol issues, found 3 grams of ginger powder reduced the majority of cholesterol markers in each participant.

7. Contains Substance That May Help Prevent Cancer

Any innovation or improvement (within reason) that helps us deal with cancer better should be welcomed. Ginger is one of those tools that more people should add to the fight.

6-gingerol, a substance found in high concentration in raw ginger, is believed to have anti-cancer properties.

A cancer study of 30 individuals found that 2 grams of ginger extract per day “significantly reduced pro-inflammatory signaling molecules in the colon.”

Although 6-gingerol has been backed by certain cases, more study is required.

8. May Improve Brain Function and Protect Against Alzheimer’s

Never forget to treat your brain to the healthy things that it needs. Stress has been known to have severely negative and damaging effects on the brain.

Animal studies have returned evidence that ginger’s anti-oxidants and bioactive compounds reduced inflammation in the brain.

According to some studies, ginger may also enhance brain function.

9. Active Ingredient is Great at Fighting Infection

Gingerol, ginger’s most important component is great for reducing your risk of infection. The extract has been shown to slow or altogether stop the grown of many different bacteria.

It’s a great way to treat gingivitis and periodontitis.
