Trying to bring your romantic partner down from being upset is no easy task. And it made even harder when you cannot figure out exactly why they are upset. Have you begun a seemingly normal conversation with your girlfriend only to be met with hostility and anger? Does it seem like she’s mad at you for absolutely no reason?

Rest assured, there is always a reason, even if you don’t know it. To help you out, here’s a list of things to do if you’re not sure why she’s mad:

1. Keep Aside Your Ego and Talk to Her

Everyone has a sense of “ego.” Now, imagine your girlfriend being mad and you begin to argue over who’s got a right to be angry. That there is letting your ego become a part of the issue.

If after going through it in your head you cannot think of what you did wrong, save that and keep it to yourself. Arguing will just aggravate the problem. Apologize, be humble, and ask what you can do to make things better.

Showing that you’re immediately ready to remedy the situation will diffuse her and help put a smile on her face.

2. Apologize to Her

Yes, sometimes you have to apologize when you’ve done nothing wrong. But it is even more important to do so when you know that you have screwed up. It shows a sense of respect between partners.

If you feel that you have done all the apologizing possible, give your girlfriend some space and let her know you’ll be close if you’re needed.

3. Listen to Her

Getting into a relationship is easy, but staying in one is harder. Communication is one of the most important parts of a relationship. Listening to your girlfriend’s feelings is one of the most important gestures you can make.

When you listen to what she has to say, you are showing you recognize her feelings are just as important as yours.

4. Give Her a Hug

Any time I am out running errands for the family and notice what looks to be a couple, there doesn’t seem to be even the slightest hand-holding. Physical touch is extremely important if you want your relationship to keep going.

If your girlfriend seems to be upset for no reason, go in for a hug at the right moment. A kiss or hug is a big deal, especially when she’s upset.

There are times where my wife has been so upset she didn’t speak to me. A simple hug eased her physical attention and got her to communicate openly without too much fuss.

5. Treat Her

Women can love food just as much as men, so why not treat your girlfriend to a nice meal. Your girlfriend, like most human beings, may get “hangry.” Filling her belly may quell the ‘beast’ and put her in a much better mood.

You’re likely to have more success if you take her to where she likes eating the most. Watch the love of your life stuff her face and change moods completely.

6. Make Her Laugh

Most relationships work because both parties share a variety of interests. When you laugh at the same things, you already have a playbook on how to bring the giggles out of your girlfriend and make her forget she’s even angry.

Tell her a joke she hasn’t heard before or put on a comedy movie neither of you has seen. When you are both laughing, you can finally relax when the tension is gone.

7. Be Sweet to Her

There have been many times I made an attempt to win a standoff with my wife, which is never a good idea. Instead of ‘coming in hot,’ change it up and be sweet to her regardless of her level of upset.

The sweet gestures and words will break down her walls and eventually chill your girl out enough that you can talk freely.

8. Use her Tantrums to Deepen Her Feelings for You

It’s natural to feel frustrated when your girlfriend is mad or upset with you. Use it as an opportunity to show that no matter how mad she gets, you will stay in control and listen to what she has to say.

Showing her that you will stay regardless of the argument taking place and in that way you will deepen your bond.

9. Look Her in The Eyes and Give Her Your Best Smile

Calming your girlfriend’s aggression can sometimes be as easy as smiling to her. The smile might be seen as odd in the middle of the argument, but it might put a pause in things and get her to smile as well.
