Goldie Hawn Has Settled All The Rumors By Finally Revealing The Truth About Her Relationship
Some couples really prove the fact that there is such thing as real, long-lasting love. Being together for three and a half decades, Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell showed that true, longstanding commitment exists in Hollywood romances.
However, the couple never got married. Hawn’s fans always wondered if she would finally get married to the love of her life, but they never got to hear those news. No one knew what was holding this couple back from not tying the knot in over 30 years of their romance. But, recently, Hawn revealed the truth about their relationship and why they never tied the knot. Read on to know what’s the secret this famous couple has been keeping away from public for so long.
1. In The Spotlight
Goldie Hawn’s predisposition to become a star was more than clear when she was very young. Her father was a band musician, and her mother was a jewelry shop/ballet school owner. Thanks to her mother, she fell in love with dancing when she was just three years old. Since then, she started learning ballet and tap.
Meanwhile, Kurt Russel was already a star as a child, achieving a big on-screen success with Walt Disney Studios. Walt Disney was amazed by the talent of this young star and offered Russel a 10-year contract. Some even say that Russel’s name was among Disney’s words.
2. Carriers Took Off
The years were passing by, and both Hawn and Russell had their careers grew. Hawn took roles in comedies, and won acclaim for movies such as Private Benjamin. Russell was struggling to overgrow his child-star status, and finally managed to do so by playing a role in a sci-fi horror classic The Thing.
Both of the actors were busy with their career, and while they were really lucky in this field, they didn’t have a lot of luck in love. Hawn divorced her first husband Gus Trikonis in 1974, but the same year she tied the knot with actor and musician Bill Hudson. But even this marriage wasn’t meant to last.
3. Children On The Way
Hawn and Hudson’s marriage also yielded two children: Kate and Oliver. Kate is a Hollywood star herself and has followed her mothers steps. However, two kids didn’t make their relationship better and the marriage fell apart in 1980.
Russel was also having his own problems in his love life. In 1983, he divorced his first wife Season Hubley. But soon, their lives will change thanks to a movie called “Swing Shift”.
4. Swing Shift
Although this movie didn’t make a huge success, it marked the beginning of Hawn and Russell’s relationship. Russell was blown away by his co-star’s talent and looks, and he suddenly had feelings for her.
He decided to make his feelings clear to Hawn who, fortunately, was smitten. Since then, their romance took off and they were inseparable ever since.
5. The Chemistry
In 2017, Hawn was telling People magazine about the impression Russell left on her when they were filming the “Swing Shift”. She told them, “He was so good-looking, but he had no pretense about him. I could tell right away he wasn’t a womanizer.”
But that wasn’t the only thing that charmed her. Russel got her because he was being so kind and friendly with her chidren. Hawn actually said that he “was a natural” and it’s when she realized that he could be the right man for her.
Having roles in the “Swing Shift” wasn’t actually the first time their paths had crossed. The couple first met in the 1968 musical “The One and Only, Genuine, Original Family Band”. In fact, it was Hawn’s first screen role ever.
But, at the time, the five-year age gap was too much for her to consider Russell as a potential partner. However, the chemistry they had obviously had to wait a little longer in order to flourish.
7. The Right Man
It seemed that waiting really paid off for the both of them. Just after their first date, Hawn and Russell were more than sure they’d found the loves of their lives. But Goldie was worried if her children will accept her new soulmate.
And, her initial instincts were right. Kate and Oliver not only accepted Kurt as their mom’s new boyfriend, but they also found a new father figure in him.
8. Father Figure
Russell also had a son named Boston from his first marriage, but he had enough love to give to Goldie’s two children as well. Kate even admitted that having Russell in her life was really important to her. She said on The Howard Stern Show in 2016, “The trust I got from [Russell] in terms of his dependability was priceless for me. He is so honest, so brutally honest. I love him so much; he is just a great guy.”
But being so much in love, Russell and Hawn wanted to have their own child. And they did! Three years after starting their romance, Goldie gave birth to their son, Wyatt. But despite having a child together, the couple still didn’t want to tie the knot.
9. Ups and Downs
But even this story is not all roses. Hawn and Russell have had rough periods in their relationship too. One of the biggest crisis was caused by Bill Hudson accusing the couple of estranging him from his own children.
He even told The Mail in 2015 “Goldie wanted to create this myth of a perfect family with Kurt, and she wanted me out”. The couple didn’t bother much, however Hawn revealed they had something else that was causing small problems during their journey.
Being in the spotlight comes with a price. Especially with good looking people that attract most people they meet. It seems that Hawn and Russell also had issues every now and then with temptations.
In fact, Hawn explained to People magazine in 2017, “Monogamy is a very tough order. You’re in the prime of your life, you are attracted to other people [whom], potentially, you have fantasies about that. It really runs the risk; if you’re not aware that you could screw up a really good thing by doing that.”
11. Elasticity In The Relationship
Hawn admitted that the couple has sometimes almost given into the temptation, but never actually have. She said that it is important to accept certain amount of elasticity in the relationship for it not to break.
She told: “I’m sure I’ve been party to it, and Kurt’s been – we’re all normal this way… There is, I guess, an elasticity to the relationship. Otherwise, it’s going to break.” So through all of their temptations, Hawn and Russell stayed together.
12. No Vows
Still, Hawn and Russell didn’t want to take vows which led a lot of people to speculate about their relationship. At one point, in Entertainment Tonight in 1997, she told: “Nothing can be better than what we have. But somehow, marriage means a lot to people, so yeah, I give that to them.”
Goldie claims that the secret of their relationship being kept afloat was in the fact they weren’t married. In an appearance on U.K. chat show Loose Women in 2016, Hawn said, “I would have been long divorced if I’d been married… If you need to feel bound to someone, then it’s important to be married. If you have enough money and enough sense of independence… [then] there’s something psychological about not being married.”
13. Choose To Stay
She then concluded by saying “For me, I chose to stay, [and] Kurt chose to stay, and we like the choice. It was perfect the way it was.” Goldie also added that their children also agreed with their decision.
However, despite explaining their stance on marriage quite early on, Hawn and Russell still get a lot of questions concerning their potential marriage. “Everyone always asks the same question,” Goldie told Entertainment Tonight in 2017. “We are kind of having fun with it.”
