International Kissing Day or World Kiss Day is celebrated only to remind people to kiss their loved ones. This act isn’t linked to any other act or even any relationship, it’s all about showing the affection toward those who you love the most.

This unofficial holiday urges people to take the time out to kiss their significant others are show them how much they appreciate that they have them in their lives.

Today, this is a worldwide phenomenon, although it’s not yet so popular as Valentine’s Day is.

World Kiss Day originated in the United Kingdom in the early 2000s.

The Act of Kissing

The act of kissing as we know it today is linked to Romans. They had an unusual practice of kissing. For them, the act of kissing was conducted at a particular time, at a specific place, or only as an indication of social status.

Moreover, Romans were those who categorized the act of kissing in three forms: the ‘osculum,’ which mean a friendly peck on the cheek, the ‘basium’, which was meant to show love by kissing on the lips, and the ‘savium’, which was a more passionate kiss on the mouth that expresses love or desire.

Even today, kissing is a simple act that enables a person to show other love. Showing a loved one how much you care for them is easy because you can use the simple act of kissing.

Even today, people use kissing across the world for different occasions.

For example, in Greece and Italy friends, both men and women commonly kiss each other on the lips when greeting each other. In France, one air kiss on each cheek is a customary greeting.

Modern Anthropologists believe that kissing developed from “Eskimo kissing” is actually the practice of rubbing noses to take in each other’s breath.

In some cultures kissing is private, so in Vietnam, kissing between spouses in only done in private, while China and Japan adopt a similar attitude toward this. In the Netherlands, people opt for three kisses as a form of greeting.
