Basketball is a sport played at the professional level by a select few. Standing at what most would call ‘giant’ height, these tall individuals that play glide across the court and attempt to sink the ball into the opposing team’s net.

While there are currently 30 teams in the NBA, very few players gain recognition across the globe for their stats and accomplishments. James Harden of the Houston Rockets has gained recognition recently for his point during the latest season. But here are a few other interesting facts about the basketball player:

1. He Signed a Deal a 13-year deal with Adidas

Harden previous had a deal with the Nike brand for TV spots, but the contract had eventually ran out. Adidas approached the Houston Rockets player in 2015 with a $200 million dollar contract that resulted in two signature shoes: the Harden Vol. 1 and the Harden Vol. 2.

“We’ve invited James Harden to join Adidas,” Spokesperson Michael Ehrlich released in a statement. “We’re a brand of creators and he truly embodies what that means with his approach to the game, his look and his style on and off the court.”

The Vol 2. provides a wider base that allows players to execute his special “Eurostep” move.

2. He is known as “The Beard”

Harden is indeed a skilled basketball player, but even if you don’t know any names in the sport, I guarantee you have seen this man’s beard. The facial hair he sports now began its infancy during his years playing college ball.

The Houston Rockets player kept it nice and trimmed until about 2011 when he decided to let it continue growing out. Aside from the occasional barber trim, Harden does nothing to his beard except make it look fantastic.

3. A Net Worth Unlike Others

Harden was set to retire from the sport back in 2017 when his contract with the Houston Rockets was up. But seeing the potential the player had, the organization offered a four-year valued at $170 million. Extending that contract, gave the baller a guaranteed $228 for the six more years he’ll be playing.

Combined with the deal from the Adidas brand, Harden net worth sits above $110 million, making him one of the richest professional athletes on the planet.

5. He Saved Basketball at Arizona State

It’s always hard to provide sports programs for students, regardless of the institution’s level. But when Arizona State’s season in 2006-07 resulted in an 8-22 record, the sport was in danger of being taken out.

During his freshmen year, Harden helped the Sun Devils achieve 21 victories and in his third led the team to 25 victories.

6. He Was Always Skilled

Born on August 26, 1989 in Los Angeles, California to a mostly absent Navy seaman, James Sr. and his mother Monja Willis, he attended Artesia High School in Lakewood.

Harden was already a surprising 6’ 1” by the time he was attending basketball tryouts. Asthma slowed him down, but it did not stop him. His ability to think on his feet impressed the coaches, he had a growth spurt and that helped him become a top national player.

Artesia High had back-to-back state championships during Harden’s time on the team, something that very few high schools are ever able to achieve.

7. He’s Played Dirty

While he’s a skilled player and is considered versatile by many fans and coaches alike, he’s no stranger to breaking a couple of rules. Harden earned himself a suspension on March 2, 2015, after kicking Lakers player LeBron James in the groin.
