We Could Re-Watch This Moment of True Love Between Marina Abramovic And Ulay Forever
Love is hard for many people to find. And though sometimes couples may part ways, the warm feelings they had for each other never fade.
Those bonds are even stronger when one dedicates their time to supporting and aiding in their partner’s work. For Marina Abramovic, she was reunited with the one person who did that for her.
Marina Abramovic is known very well in the art world for her ‘performance art.’ One of her more notable performances involved having an array of items set on a table before and allowing the audience to place the objects somewhere on her.
After that performance, Abramovic felt she learned quite a bit. “What I learned was that… if you leave it up to the audience, they can kill you… I felt really violated: they cut up my clothes, stuck rose thorns in my stomach.”
The “grandmother of performance art” met a man named Ulay in 1976 who she stayed in a romantic relationship with for twelve years. They spent their time together working on many performance art pieces, one involving breathing each other’s exhaled breath, leading to them falling unconscious.
Their relationship was ended in a piece only performance artists could think up. Ulay and Marina walked opposite directions on the Great Wall of China, their meeting in the middle signifying the end of their relationship.
In 2010, during a performance titled The Artist is Present at the New York Museum of Modern Art, Marina Abramovic was reunited with her formal lover.
The video shows Marina being overcome with emotion at the sight of her former lover, her eyes welling up with tears. It is easy to tell from the look on her face that she never lost her love for Ulay. Seeing him there was definitely a welcome surprise.
Their reunion is a touching sight to behold and well worth the time to watch.
