Sports are a big part of the world’s way of socializing with each other. Even with all the ones that we know exist, there has to be a few that many around the world would consider their favorites. Have you ever thought about what the world as a whole saw as its favorite?

1. Golf

Made popular in the United States by the PGA, golf is a far more popular sport than its given credit for. Around the world, it has an estimated following of 450 million. It primarily influences the regions of North America, Western Europe, and East Asia.

The sport was first played in Scotland, where it eventually made its way to the UK and eventually the world.

Golf is played by using different clubs to strike a ball, through a pre-determined course, with as few ‘strokes’ as one can manage.

2. Baseball

Having had its first officially recognized game in1846, baseball is one of the oldest sports in the world still played to this day. It maintains its highest popularity in Japan, the Caribbean, and the United States. The sport has an estimated 500 million followers.

Two teams of nine players each participate in batting and fielding to earn points. There were many different versions of the sport played in the US during the 19th century before gaining popularity throughout the country.

The game became so popular across the world, many countries began professional nationwide leagues for their citizens to participate in.

3. Table Tennis

If the name table tennis does not sound familiar, you might know the sport as “Ping Pong.” The origins of the sport can be traced to 19th century England, where it was created as a way to miniaturize lawn tennis.

In the modern day, the sport consists of two team of between two to four players, hitting a hollow plastic ball over a net on a table, using paddles that may also be referred to as rackets.

Across the world, the sport has an estimated following of 875 million. Some of the more successfully countries in the sport have been Sweden, South Korea, and China.

4. Volleyball

This high-energy sport has an estimated following of 900 million across the world. Its main areas of influence include North America and Western Europe. William G. Morgan, an instructor of the Young Men’s Christian Association, invented the sport in 1895.

Morgan sought to combine elements from sports such as basketball, tennis, handball and baseball.

The sport is played with two teams of 6 players each who strike the ball over the net so it hits the ground on the opposing side.

5. Basketball

First created by Dr. James Naismith in 1891 in Massachusetts, United States, the sport is said to have an estimated following of 825 million fans worldwide. It was meant as an alternative to football both because it could be played indoors and because accidents were less likely to happen.

Basketball is played by two teams of five each, with the goal of the game being to score successful shot through a hoop 10 feet above the ground.

6. Cricket

The sport is played with two teams of eleven players each, where the objective is for each team to score more runs than their opponent. Cricket is said to have an estimated following of 2.5 billion globally. It is most popular in the United Kingdom and countries belonging to the Commonwealth.

The sport began early in the 16th century and was dubbed a national sport of England in the 18th century.

It is also popular in the former British colonies of India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Australia.

7. Association Football (Soccer)

When a great deal of the world hears the word ‘football,’ this is the sport they think of. With over 4 billion fans, it is undoubtedly the most popular sport in the entire world. In China, there is evidence a game similar to soccer was played as early as the 2nd century.

The ancient people of Greece, Rome, and Japan were all believed to have played the sport at some point as well.

The modern day sport began in England and gained a massive following before it spread across the world. It is most popular in Europe and the Americas.
