Nathan Fillion was born in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, on March 27, 1971, to retired English teachers Robert “Bob” Fillion and June “Cookie” Fillion. He is the younger of two sons, his older brother being Jeff who is a high school principal.
Fillion grew up in Edmonton’s Mill Woods neighborhood where completed his secondary and post-secondary education. He attended Holy Trinity Catholic High School, Concordia University College of Alberta, and the University of Alberta, where he was a member of the Kappa Alpha Society.
In 1977 he lost his hearing in the left ear. Before moving to New York City in 1994, he participated in improv the theatre, including Theatresports with Rapid Fire Theatre and improvised soap opera Die-Nasty. He has been a U.S. citizen since 1997.
Fillion’s first regular role was on a daytime soap opera, One Life to Live, as Joey Buchanan, where he stayed for three years. His role he was nominated in 1996 for a Daytime Emmy Award.
Nathan appeared in recurring or guest-starring roles on various television series for the next few years including “Two Guys, A Girl, and a Pizza Place”, “Buffy the Vampire Slayer”, and the film “Saving Private Ryan”.
He starred in the short-lived cult hit, “Firefly” in 2002, which spawned the feature film, “Serenity”, and appeared in various films including “Slither”, “Waitress”, and “White Noise 2”.
He had a recurring role on “Desperate Housewives” in 2006 and also appeared in the popular web series, “Dr Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog”.
He had been starring in the popular series, “Castle” alongside Stana Katic from 2009 until the series was canceled in 2016. When he was shooting Castle, Fillion and co-star Stana Katic allegedly hated each other in real life.
But they had on-screen chemistry when the cameras were rolling. His $100,000 per episode salary probably kept him going all those years.
In February 2018, Fillion was cast to star as John Nolan in the new ABC TV series The Rookie, which was created by former Castle executive producer Alexi Hawley.
