Over 87% NFL Professional Players Suffer From This Brain Disease, The Latest Study Shows

Football is a dangerous sport. Despite the padding players are outfitted in, serious injury can occur. Whether you or a family member plays this sport, it’s important to consider how one’s brain may suffer.

Bennet Ifeakandu Omalu, a Nigerian-American neuropathologist, had discovered something called chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) and found connections between the disease and repeated trauma to the head.

What’s more worrisome than the discovery of CTE itself is how widespread it is now. Because professional athletes are more prone to sustaining head injuries, they are statistically more likely to have CTE.

There are more than 2 million concussions in the United States each year that are connected to sports.

The Journal of American Medicine published a study in which researchers examined the brains of 202 former players ranging from high school to the NFL level. Out of the 111 NFL players studied, an astonishing 99% were found to have CTE. It was also concluded that 87% of the total examined had the disease.

Research has also found that with players that have CTE, the more they play the worse their condition will get.

Many former football players with it have exhibited symptoms such as suicidal behavior, memory issues, dementia, and displays of aggression.

Jesse Mez, assistant professor of neurology, feels that the study may not have gotten the accurate number, citing that some may have been more motivated than others to donate their loved ones to the study due to their display of symptoms.

The Boston University of Medicine, where the brain study was conducted, receives about 50 to 100 donations per year. This will aid in their efforts to further understand chronic traumatic encephalopathy.

With all the evidence to show what happens when a football player takes too many hits to the head, some parents may lose confidence in letting their kids participate in the activity.
