Music is an important part of everyone’s life. A variety of genres can bring about many things in a person’s mind. They may connect with the lyrics on a deeper level than most or find a certain euphoria in the way an instrument is played. Sometimes music can bring up memories once thought forgotten.

With all the music that exists in the world today, everyone should have at least a handful of favorites. But to identify a single song that can be labeled the “most iconic” would be a task and a half.

Don’t worry, folks. This is where the power of science comes in to help find and understand the answer to that question.

A study was conducted at Goldsmiths, the University of London by a research team to determine through special measurements was the most iconic song in the world is. The team was led by computer scientist Dr. Mark Grearson.

A special program was used to scan through certain lists of music published by the magazine. The program identified traits in songs like a key, bpm, and sonic variance. The songs that shared these traits were among some of the most popular to ever exist.

If you took a wild guess, would you be able to name the world’s “most iconic song?” You might be right and you might be wrong. Don’t think too far back in music’s history.

The title of “most iconic song” ended up going to none other than grunge band Nirvana’s Smells like Teen Spirit.

Smells like Teen Spirit can be identified almost immediately by the instrumentals at its very beginning. Many self-proclaimed bands practice this song for their local shows, sometimes as a tribute to the late Kurt Cobain.
