A School In Seattle Decides To Start School Later So Teens Can Get More Sleep

Those of us who work jobs that require a lot of concentration and focus know how important a good night’s rest is. It is recommended that a person get at least 8 hours of sleep a night, but that’s even more important for the developing brains of teenagers.

The city of Seattle decided it was important for their students to get a good night’s rest and decided to delay school’s opening in an effort to help.

Puberty alters a teen’s circadian rhythm, delaying their sleep-wake cycles substantially. The standard school schedules do not seem to match up with the sleep-wake cycles of teenagers, robbing them of their 8 to 10 hours of recommended sleep every night.

The Seattle School District decided to do something about this back in 2016. Instead of starting at the usual time, the opening of high schools was pushed 55 minutes later to 8:45. With the aid of special monitors, researchers were able to track the sleep patterns of 10th-grade students for two weeks.

The study was conducted at two schools, one in what would be considered an “economically disadvantaged” area.

Students were getting maybe six hours and 50 minutes the night before school. After the change was implemented, they were reportedly getting about 7 hours and 24 minutes of sleep every night. Bedtime remained the same before and after.

Researchers also noticed a 4.5% increase in grades but had no way to prove the increase in sleep time had something to do with it.

The later time also found the economically disadvantaged school had an increase in students arriving on time and attending consistently.

A good night’s rest can go a long way towards getting a job done well and done right. Make sure your kids get enough rest, even if they protest their bedtime. They’ll thank you later.
