This Sri-Lankan Fortress Was Built Atop Of The 218-Yard-High Rock

If you’ve never heard of the fortress of Sigiriya, you are not alone. This ancient place was lost to time more than once, but it still stands tall among the beautiful surrounding gardens. If you were planning on taking a once-in-a-lifetime trip, put this on the list of possible destinations.

Located in the Matale district of Sri Lanka, the monstrous rock stand at a whopping 218 yards high. Sigiriya, likely thanks to its beauty is named one of Sri Lanka’s seven World Heritage Sites by UNESCO. With the fortress built on top of a rock, it sounds like excellent town-planning.

Sigiriya stood as the capital of Sri Lanka during the Middle Ages, under the Dhatusena Dynasty. It the third century BC, it was home to Buddhist monks. It also served as residence to King Kassapa I for a short time.

The Sangha Buddhist cult also opened a church here in the fifth century.

After being abandoned completely in 1155, it stood alone for almost seven hundred years until 1828. Much of Sri Lanka’s past is painted along the western wall, which spans an area of 140 meters long and 40 meters high.

Today the former fortress stands surrounded by a complex of gardens and fountain that help to add to the massive rock’s majesty.

Sigiriya was also given the nickname ‘Lion’s Rock’ for the massive paws that sit at the base of the staircase leading to the top of the massive stone.

If you want to get the best view of the area surrounding Lion’s Rock, then you’ll have to make the journey up a total of 1200 steps. If you’ve been working out and you aren’t afraid of heights, then getting to the top of the fortress should come with ease.
