This Spider Looks Like It Has A Dog’s Head
The animal kingdom is full of surprises. Some types of creatures have been cataloged as having more than 10,000 species. One of those known for such a thing is the creatures that fall into the arachnid category. While we possess a great deal of information on arachnids, we still haven’t cataloged every species.
Arachnids have been made popular by scary movies and specials on the Animal Planet network. We know for certain that spiders and scorpions are designated as arachnids, but little do we know that something called the Bunny Harvestman is also part of the club.
The Bunny Harvestman has a bizarre look about it. Some might say that it appears to have the head of a dog, but many more agree the protrusions resemble those of bunny ears.
The creature is maybe the size of a human thumbnail and can be immediately identified by its unique appearance. Some have even joked that it resembles the black dog, The Grim, from the Harry Potter series.
Andreas Kay, a wildlife photographer, snapped a photo of the creature back in July 2017 in Ecuador while on an expedition in the jungle.
“Contrary to a common belief,” stated Kay, “Harvestman do not have venom glands and are absolutely harmless. Harvestman has been around for at least 400 million years and lived even before the dinosaurs.”
It’s quite a surprise to find that birds, alligators, and crocodiles aren’t the only ‘living fossils’ that we can see today.
First described by German arachnid specialist Carl Friedrich Roewer in 1959, the Harvestman belongs to the class Arachnida, and its scientific classification is Metagryne bicolumnata.
The function of the Bunny Harvestman’s protrusions is still unknown, and the spots that look like eyes? Its real eyes are actually to either side of these little spots.
I think I have a new favorite arachnid. What about you?
