Technology is at an incredible stage in human history. Many of the inventions created to make our lives easier also put us in danger. Vehicles make our lives so much easier, transporting us to work and school. But these inventions come with the unfortunate side effect of polluting the environment with the unintended amount of greenhouse gases.

With all this pollution caused by things meant to help us, shouldn’t there be something else to counteract the fumes escaping our vehicles’ tailpipes? One Dutch artist-turned-scientist has designed something known as the Smog Free Tower.

Daan Roosaagarde, inventor of the tower says, “The air that we all breathe in at major cities across the world, whether it’s London or Beijing, Paris or Delhi, it’s the same as 17 cigarettes per day.” Air quality has become so bad that children as young as 8 have received lung cancer diagnoses.

The first Smog Free Tower to sit in public was constructed and deployed in Beijing, China. The city of Beijing advised its citizens in the past to avoid all outdoor activity as the quality became 30 times unhealthier than normal by WHO standards, making it the perfect testing ground for the technology.

It uses as little as 1,170 watts of energy, gathered by green tech such solar panels, to suck up 30,000 cubic meters of pollution per hour and pumps clean air back out.

“By charging the Smog Free Tower with a small positive current, an electrode will send positive ions into the air. These ions will attach themselves to fine dust particles. A negatively charged surface – the counter electrode – will then draw the positive ions in, together with the fine dust particles. The fine dust that would normally harm us is collected together with the ions and stored inside of the tower. This technology manages to capture ultra-fine smog particles which regular filter systems fail to do.”

Interestingly enough, the smog-filtered through the tower is about 40 carbon. Those of you familiar with chemistry known that diamonds are also made of carbon. The realization drove Daan to start a Smog Free jewelry line.

It’s great to see an invention that can genuinely improve air quality and it would be great to see in other places. If other cities and countries follow suit, the air quality around the world may improve.
