Tips To Travel More In 2019

Vacations are a great way to relax, but how often do we get the opportunity to take one? Bills might take the majority of your check, not leaving you with a whole lot to do anything. And what do you do when you’ve exhausted what you’ve saved in vacation days?

Here are a couple of ways you can still work and have a little vacation to yourself:

1. Small Weekend Trips

Who really needs to hop on a plane and fly across the ocean? Save yourself the hassle of struggling to navigate a different country’s airport and or planning ahead if it’ll take three years to go.

Do you get two-week vacation by default? Treat yourself to an entire week away from work. Plan a three or four-day trip to a nearby destination a few weeks ahead of time. Take your family fishing at different bodies of water near home or visit your local art museums.

2. Stopover programs

Have you ever visited a country and wished you could stay a little longer? With stopover programs, that is possible. Certain airlines like Icelandair will allow you to extend your layover by as much as seven days, free of charge. Finnair, a Finnish airline, allows visitors to extend their layover by five nights, and for $60 a similar stopover program from Singapore Airlines includes hotel accommodations and airport transfer.

3. Fly Weekdays

Sure, flying during the week seems like it might be more hectic, but you have a great chance of finding a cheaper flight. According to Airfare Watchdog, flying on Tuesdays or Wednesdays will give you the best prices for your money.

If it’s possible, choose those days to both depart and return for vacation. With what you save on tickets, you’ll have more to spend on souvenirs.

4. Credit Cards with Travel Perks

This might seem counter-conducive to the whole “saving money” idea, but as long as you maintain payments, you will benefit well from the travel perks. You can accumulate things like frequent flyer miles just for making large purchases, even if you’ve yet to step aboard a plane.

Capitol One Venture offers customers 2x miles on every purchase and 10x miles on a few thousand hotels. Chase Sapphire Preferred offers 2x points on travel and dining, plus 1 point for every dollar spent on purchases.

5. Flight Alerts

Even if you spent a couple of hours researching the best flight deals, it might come up when you don’t have the opportunity to check. Sign up for flight alerts from different airlines to get alerted as soon as a great deal comes up. Delta and JetBlue often have ‘flash sales,’ something most people may not know.

It’s also best if you plan a couple of months ahead, according to CheapAir.

6. City Passes

These sound like something everyone should think about getting when visiting a foreign country. Portugal’s Lisboa Card gives tourists unlimited access to public transportation and free entry into museums.

The city of Paris offers the Paris Museum Pass, giving you free access to dozens of museums and monuments.

7. Travel During Off-Season

There tends to be a “season” for when it is best to vacation. Even if a place is ‘better’ to visit at a certain time of year, why not visit your dream destination when you know the crowds won’t be around?

If your job allows you the luxury of travel, go during the quieter months. Instead of going to Italy between June and August, when it is mostly populated by tourists, change it up and go between January and March. Sure, it’ll be winter, but you’ll save money on food, plane tickets, and hotels.

Don’t let the weather take away from Italy natural romantic aesthetic.

8. Research the Destination

There is nothing worse than unnecessary expenses popping up when we least expect them. Make sure you are researching where you wish to go before making the journey there. A Google search will inform you of how best to save money, based on the country you are visiting.
In parts of Europe such as Italy or Spain, for example, water and bread are not complimentary.

9. Book a Red-Eye or Be Flexible

Since most of us sleep during the twilight hours anyway, an overnight red-eye flight is a great way to maximize time if you are on a quick trip. Depart for your New York trip from LAX at 9 pm to give yourself the entire day when you arrive.
