Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. No creature created by nature can be ugly per se. Still, some people see certain animals as aesthetically unpleasant. However, when talking about ugly animals, people tend to describe some bird species as particularly ugly.

Let’s see which ones they are, and get to what seems to be the ugliest bird out there according to the opinion of Internet users.

10. Helmeted Guineafowl (Numida meleagris)

Helmeted Guineafowl is a large-chicken sized bird, originating from sub-Saharan Africa, but today it is spread and domesticated in the entire world. This polka-dot feathered bird is more prone to running than actually flying. These weird and ugly-faced birds are easy to recognize by red helmet like color scheme on the head and huge horn-like crest.

9. Roseate Spoonbill (Platalea ajaja)

Rosetae Soonbill inhabits southern Florida, coasts of Texas and South America. This poor bird from most angles reminds of flamingo, by both color and shape, but its bald, platypus-like head simply ruins the magic. Roseate Spoonbill looks like some dangerous zombie infection has attacked a flamingo, starting from its red beady eyes.

8. King Vulture (Sarcoramphus papa)

Native to Central and South America, King Vultures are profoundly ugly, due to their weird and random vibrant coloration of the head, bulging eyes, and grotesque wattles. What makes looks of these birds even more disturbing is the fact that the head looks as if it was attached to some other bird`s body.

7. Marabou Stork

Behold incredibly ugly Marabou Stark – huge, bald-headed, with dangling pink wattle. The ugliest part, however, isn`t mentioned yet. It is the mangy-kitchen-shears-like face. Marabou Starks eat all kinds of things from feces, over other birds to things they stumble upon while going through human garbage. It kind of goes well with their appearance.

6. Ocellated Turkey (Meleagris ocellata)

Looking weird on so many levels, Yucatan inhabitant Ocellated Turkey has its bald neck and head covered with orange spherical growths that look like some bad bacterial infection. Head and neck are pale blue, with red circles around the eyes look like they don’t belong together with the rest of the body covered with dark grey, purple and green feather.

5. Northern Bald Ibis (Geronticus eremita)

With only about 500 living birds in the wilderness, Northern Bald Ibis is one of the most endangered species on this list. It is also among one of the ugliest birds around. As the name of the species suggests, the bird is scarily bold and pink skinned, with also bold and wrinkly pink neck.

4. White-headed Vulture (Trigonoceps occipitalis)

Inhabiting the area of sub-Saharan Africa, White-headed Vulture is somehow incredibly ugly and good looking at the same time. With pale blue and pink face coloration and Mohawk-like hair on the head, collar-like feathers around the neck, White Headed Vulture looks like a punk kid in a baroque costume.

3. Wood Stork (Mycteria Americana)

Inhabiting shallow waters of Florida’s swamps, Wood Stork is beyond ugly. Its head looks like something you would expect pre-historical flying dinosaur’s head to look like. With its skinny, dark legs and body covered with beautiful and fluffy white and black feathers, Wood Stork looks like a bizarre mix of the pre-history and disco era.

2. Capuchinbird (Perissocephalus tricolor)

Not only does this bird, living in South America, look as if it has put the capuchin monkey as a disguise, it also releases completely bizarre and horrifying vocalization, being something in between of lowing cow and the sound of a chainsaw. The population numbers are unknown for Capuchinbird, but destroying its habitat bit by bit certainly does not improve the situation.

1. Southern Cassowary (Casuarius casuarius)

Southern Cassowary deserves this title of the ugliest for both ugliness and its weirdness factor. Every part of this bird’s body is so weird that it deserves special mentioning – from three-toed feet with almost 5 inches long claws, beady, unsettling eyes, double wattle, blue throat, and topping it all massive crest over the head. Sorry to put it this way, but Southern Cassowary really is the freakiest of all birds!
