Health foods are always shown on multiple television channels and other mediums. But are these specially formulated diets really necessary? What’s with all the crazy supplements? Whatever you spend on expensive superfoods or supplements, you may not get your money’s worth.

Rest assured, not all superfoods are expensive. Here is a list of superfoods that don’t always get enough credit:

1. Red Bell Peppers

The bell pepper, also known as sweet pepper for its taste when cooked, is a superfood hiding in plain sight. What’s the secret they are hiding? They contain more than twice the recommended daily vitamin. It seems that they are a much better source of it than any fruit that exists currently.

Vitamin C is an important part of our diet that needs focus. In addition to keeping skin smooth, triggering the body to make more collagen.

2. Eggs

Eggs have long been the subject of the “too much cholesterol” debate. As with all foods, they should be eaten in moderation. Not only do they provide ample protein for anyone eating them, but they also contain choline, an essential nutrient that aids greatly in brain development.

The best way to eat eggs is supposed without condiments, but we know a little salt and pepper go a long way for flavor. Since the cholesterol lies mostly in the yolk, you can cook up the white to cut back.

3. Oysters

Often sold in large sacks, these shellfish are also touted an aphrodisiac to increase one’s sex drive. The thing people should really focus on is the abundance of nutrients they can provide. Oysters are high in omega-3’s and vitamin D, which are painfully difficult to get through other means. They also contain a substantial amount of B12, a nutrient that keeps nerves and blood cells healthy, in addition helping create DNA.

95% of the world’s supply are raised in sustainable fish farms, so there should be no worry on a shortage of them.

4. Seaweed

Seaweed has become part of the regular diet of Japanese citizens living in Okinawa. Part of their traditional diet for generations, it is believed that seaweed has many health benefits.

It is also a great source of iodine, leaving you the freedom season with sea or kosher salt during cooking.

If you are adventurous, there are a variety of seaweeds that exist. Take your time to see all the ones that exist, and see which fits best with the diet you are trying to establish.

5. Mushrooms

To the United States, mushrooms are a delicious garnish or can be an entrée in food. But the Chinese culture has, for thousands of years, believed in the healing properties of mushrooms.

While there is not enough evidence to establish it, researchers have identified compounds tied to improved immunity. They also have some that may protect against cancer.

Regardless of the edible type of mushroom you choose, they are an excellent yet not-so-recognized source for essential vitamins and minerals.

6. Peanuts

Peanuts are an amazing legume that has been transformed many times over. They don’t get enough attention, thanks to how promoted almonds are. But they are a recommended source of folate, which helps brain development.

Many dieticians recommend them for vegetarians and vegans, since finding decent sources of folate isn’t so easy for them. They also contain high concentrations of vitamin E.

My personal favorites have to be the honey-roasted peanuts. Who doesn’t love a sugary snack that may help boost your brain and protect it from aging with its nutrients?

7. Ginger

The spicy root has long been used across Asia as a way to treat different kinds of ailments. And there’s a good reason for that.

Ginger contains something known as Gingerol, the substance responsible for the root’s ability to reduce inflammation and distribute antioxidants. It has also been found to slow or outright stop the grown of certain bacteria.

It’s also a good way to treat nausea without having to turn to pills. Pregnant women can take it to treat the related ill feelings, and even post-op surgery patients can take it to treat their vomiting.

You can even drink ginger tea to help prevent gingivitis and periodontitis, two dental diseases.
