Rare Footage Of A Humpback Whale Leaping Entirely Out Of The Water

The ocean is home to many majestic creatures. Most of the people that frequent the waters that span our Earth have some pretty incredible stories. Some fisherman come back with stories of monstrosities they fought at the end of their lines, but there are times where the sights alone can invoke a sense of child-like wonder.

Although they only grow to be about half the size of a Blue Whale, Humpback Whales are pretty famous for being the most consistently spotted on any variety that exists today. A full grown adult can grow to weigh about 79,000 lbs or the equivalent of 24 full-sized African Hippos.

Based on scientific observation, it was found that Humpbacks travel a total of 16,000 miles (25,000 km) each year. They’re known to feed in polar waters and can usually be found in tropical waters during their breeding season. During the breeding season, they actually fast and live off of the fat they’ve accumulated over the course of a year.

It’s not easy to get any whale on footage. You have to be consistently visiting their frequent spots just for the chance to catch a glimpse. Scuba diver Craig Capehart happened to be in the right place at the right time, as his video shows.

“It seems that never before has a recording been made of an adult humpback whale leaping entirely out of the water. A very rare event, indeed.”

It seems that Capehart was the first person on the planet to catch an adult humpback whale leave the water completely.

We know that dolphins love to jump out of the water when they’re playing around. There has even been video footage taken of Great Whites rocketing out of the ocean to catch their meals off-guard.

But what could an adult humpback be doing jumping so high? We know for a fact that when their tails slap the surface, the noise can be heard for miles around.
