Everyone has their morning routine. Someone starts their day with a cup of coffee, others grab the newspapers, other exercise or go out for a jog. You might get under the cold water while you’re still semi-awake. But which morning routines will set you up for a successful day, and which ones are ruining your overall wellbeing and should be avoided at all costs.

1. The Big Old Snooze

According to sleep specialists, the worst thing you can do is snooze your alarm. What happens is that when you hit the snooze button, you wake up and get out of your sleep cycle, when you get back to sleep, you actually aren’t helping to get any more rest than if you just got up at the sound of the alarm.

When you snooze, you lose. And you lose your energy too. You will wake up feeling more tired. So, start regulating your sleep and give your best to get up at the first sound of the alarm.

2. Reaching For Your Phone First

You’ll notice they are packed with both carbs and sugars which will only make you more hungry throughout the day. Instead of having these kinds of meals, opt for healthy sugar-free options and include fruits that will cover up your need for sweet taste.

4. Drinking Coffee First Thing In The Morning

If you drink coffee before 9.30 a.m., you might want to change this habit. Namely, doing so is not good for your body, because your organism already produces higher amounts of energy between 8 and 9 a.m.

By drinking coffee during that time will confuse your body’s cortisol monitoring system, making you more tired in the afternoon. Instead of reaching out for your cup of coffee in the morning, have a glass of water and wait until 10 am to get your first dose of caffeine.

5. Not Drinking Water

During sleep, your bodily functions are still on and are using up important sources such as water. When you wake up, your body has gone for seven to eight hours without water, so it is crucial to hydrate your body properly as soon as you wake up.

Start drinking a big glass of water first thing in the morning, add some lime or lemon if you prefer, and you will notice that you will wake up more easily. Not only, but doing so will bring you many other health benefits such as detoxing your liver, helping you have a regular bowel movement, preventing UTIs, boosting your immune system and even strengthening your brain.

If you want to maximize the health benefits, opt for room temperature water instead of drinking cold water.

6. Skipping Exercise

Researchers have shown that working out in the morning has added benefits when compared to exercising later in the evening. If you exercise in the morning, you will have a better, deeper sleep in the night, your metabolism will see a bigger boost, and your productivity will be increased.

According to some researches, you are also more likely to eat healthier if you exercise in the morning.

7. Not Making Up Your Bed

Namely, making up your bed in the morning is linked with increased productivity throughout the day. There isn’t any health harm in not making up your bed, but, apparently, it’s only a matter of forming small good habits that will spark chain reactions and lead to better decisions later on.

Therefore, before heading out, make your bed and think about how you’re starting your day right.

8. Hot Shower

If you’re among those that love to steam up their bathroom in the morning, maybe you will want to rethink it. Hot water has a calming, relaxing effect on our bodies. Enough said, having a hot shower in the morning will only make you slower and sleepier.

Instead, take quick cold showers that will make you feel more awake. Studies have shown that your mood can also improve after cold showers. How? Our bodies release energizing hormone adrenaline as well as feel-good endorphins during and after having a shower with cold water.
